Saturday, August 5, 21 Ideas for the First Week of School As I gear up to start planning the upcoming first week of school, I am suddenly reminded that I never got around to blogging about what I did during the first week of school LAST year in it’s entirety. I made a list, and I was shocked to find out that I did 21 different activities last year. I knew we did a bunch, but even I was shocked by that number! So, I’ve decided to blog about those activities in the hopes that it will inspire me to get started planning for this year!
It is important to note that all of my students did not complete all of these activities.

To better serve those that ask me this question, I decided to write down my full step process. It’s important to note that before I start, I pause to make sure I enjoyed my morning devotions. It’s a fail to only spend time with the Lord while prepping a sermon. The following is my step-by-step method for creating a sermon when given ample time to prepare: Be sure to understand the context to prevent abusing the passage.
It is also valuable to begin thinking about different groups of people who will be listening. For example, what will a non-Christian think when they hear this text? What will an uninformed new Christian think? What will a mature Christian think? What will a Christian wandering away think? How do I engage each of these groups to get them on board?

Ecological impact of the dingo after its arrival in Mainland Australia The thylacine is likely to have become near-extinct in mainland Australia about 2, years ago, and possibly earlier in New Guinea. Doubts exist over the impact of the dingo since the two species would not have been in direct competition with one another as the dingo hunts primarily during the day , whereas it is thought that the thylacine hunted mostly at night. In addition, the thylacine had a more powerful build, which would have given it an advantage in one-on-one encounters.
The thylacine was also much less versatile in diet than the omnivorous dingo. The adoption of the dingo as a hunting companion by the indigenous peoples would have put the thylacine under increased pressure. The results show that the humans were obviously one of the major factors in the extinction of many species in Australia.

Monday, December 9, Book Speed Dating: I’ve wanted to try it out for awhile now, and I finally went for it last week. I wanted to use a smaller “test” group before trying this with a class of 35 eighth graders, so I tried it with our resource reading classes first.
So how can you really get to know someone in such a short amount of time? With the right questions, of course. Why are you single? This is a great question for obvious reasons. You can find out a lot about a man with this simple question. Was he the victim of a cheating girlfriend, or was he a controlling hothead the woman could no longer stand? Have you ever been married?
Do you have any kids?

In fact, I had just met this man. And we were in a brightly lit yoga studio in the Lower Haight with a dream catcher on the wall and a statue of Buddha in the corner. Roughly 40 other singles were paired off around us, all engaged in the exact same awkward declaration — yes, strangers had been instructed to pledge their unconditional devotion to each other.
Tantra, meditation, partner yoga and improv acting. Despite its name, these are clothing-on, nonsexual events. This was an evening I had signed up for as a revolt of sorts, to combat the monotony of internet dating. I had no desire to go on yet another repetitive walk down Valencia, coffee in hand, with the latest man I had swiped right on. Plus, I considered it efficient—the speed-dating style essentially let me knock out 20 dates in one night.
At worst, I would have a story to laugh about.

Last week we ended with the Secret Ingredient that Ties Top Teams Together , where the bottom line is that people need to really know each other before they can become a high performing team. When team members have understood and accepted the power of disclosure I do a number of team building activities that helps them get everything together. Example of some of these questions are: How would your best friend describe you? What is your dream job? What are you most passionate about?
What would you take with you to a desert island? If you had to be someone else for a day, who would you be and why? If you could invite anyone, dead or alive, to dinner, who would it be? If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Posted on October 7, by librariantiff One of the most powerful things I can do for my students is work to promote reading for fun and helping students find books that they will enjoy. I feel like middle school is one of those key times in life where many students either take the path to become a life-long reader…or not.
I pulled books that I frequently recommend from 7 different genres and put them in boxes at each of my 7 tables. It exposes readers to new genres that they may not seek out on their own. I set a timer like the one projected on the screen for five minutes. For the first 30 seconds, they can peruse the books in the box at their table and select a book. Then, they spend 4 minutes reading the book to see if it hooks them. With 30 seconds remaining, they make note of the title of the book and give it a ranking.
If at any time they find a book they want to check out, they can hold on to that book. All other books go back in the box, we rotate the boxes, and repeat this activity times. I always get great feedback from teachers and students with this activity…they love it! By the final round, about half of the students will typically have a book that they want to check out.
I did this several weeks ago with my 8th graders, and this week the 6th graders are having their turn. Do you do something similar to this?
